Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area

The Sellars Farm site represents a relatively small, fortified Mississippian Period (AD 1000-1450) mound center consisting of a large platform mound and village area surrounded by a roughly oval palisade embankment and ditch complex. The palisade complex encloses an area of 10.2 acres, and consists of two embankments separated by a shallow ditch.

Archeological Mounds

Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area is a Mississippian culture archaeological site. The platform mound was the site of a settlement from about 1000 to 1300 CE. The non-profit Friends of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area organization conducts tours and upkeep of the site.

Numerous sandstone figurines have been unearthed on the site. One of these statues, known as "Sandy," was featured on a United States postage stamp. and is the official State Artifact of Tennessee.
